Big Bucket Software you like to use
My top secret project…

…can be found here.

It’s an OS X dashboard widget that works as a personalized TV guide. The general concept goes something like this:

If you’ve ever missed an episode of your favorite TV show, tuned in only to find that it wasn’t airing or are just looking for a TV guide personalized to your taste, then look no further than TV Forecast.

TV Forecast helps you to keep an eye on all of your favorite TV shows by keeping them together in one place: on the dashboard.

I came up with the idea when Lost was on hiatus. I would visit from time to time to check the date that the next episode was going to air, but really, what I wanted was the number of days. Hopefully you get good use out of this widget! Any feedback is welcome.

It was just recently added to Apple’s Dashboard database and is currently the featured widget. How very, very cool. In the last couple of days, I’ve had approximately 800 downloads. It’s pretty difficult to track the exact value and I have no idea how I’m going to track the downloads that come from Apple’s website so I’m going to have to look into that.

  • Great widget! I’ve added to

    Thank you!

It is getting very popular! Congratulations! What about a firefox plugin version?

  • wapittma — 12:59 pm on 6.3.2007

I love it. Can you somehow make it resizable or better yet collapsible? I have a lot of widgets on my dashboard and hate not being able to fit this one in. I like this widget a lot and will be passing the word on it.

  • Matt Comi — 1:05 pm on 6.3.2007

Hi wapittma – thanks for the feedback! My plan for the next version is to include a “mini-mode” where only the next TV show to air will be displayed – perhaps with a countdown.

Alternatively, I’m considering supporting the option to adjust the number of rows – but no promises on that 🙂

However I won’t be touching this widget again until I release my next one – stay tuned for that 🙂

  • Yo, this widget is cool and all, but for some reason when I search for “Grey’s Anatomy” nothing comes up. I also tried other TV shows and nada. I think u should try to fix it. Thanx 🙂

  • wapittma — 2:10 am on 7.3.2007

great. That sounds good to me.

  • unclecal — 2:16 pm on 7.3.2007

    Cool widget.
It would be neat to be able to see the last aired episode and perhaps a episode number if the data is there.

    keep up the great work.

  • SgT.Calavera — 6:12 pm on 7.3.2007

Great little widget!! Just what I waited for.
Keep up the good work! 🙂

  • aaron Dubois — 8:45 pm on 7.3.2007

How do I switch it over to the other side? There is no ” i ” at any corner.

  • Matt Comi — 8:49 pm on 7.3.2007

I’ve seen the Dashboard do that before – There is an ‘i’ in the bottom right corner. If it isn’t appearing, move the cursor away from the widget entirely and then back onto it. If that doesn’t work, then just try flick the dashboard on and off (F12).

    Hope that helps!

  • i can’t flip this widget over either! i tried flicking the dashboard on and off, but it doesn’t change anything. there’s no “i” in the corner. i’ve even tried re-downloading it a few times and no luck. any ideas??

  • arebelspy — 3:45 am on 8.3.2007

This widget is awesome. Thanks Matt!

  • Great widget.
Only request so far would be to have it display the time it will air along with the day.
My problem is I don’t rememeber the day or time a show I like is on.

    Keep up the great work!

  • trouille — 9:44 pm on 8.3.2007

Niiiice!!! Very cool, I check it all the time
BUT…;)…Like “unclecal” said, the episode number is missing…great job

  • Matt Comi — 10:11 pm on 8.3.2007

Branden – I intend to add that feature in a future release.
trouille – I don’t have the season episode number to process, only the total episode number… if that makes sense. As in, episode #60, not Season 3 Episode 2… and I personally don’t find this number very useful.

Thanks for the feedback and support everyone!

  • Hey!
This widget seems cool, but i cant find any serie!
I tried prison break, heroes, entourage, my name is earl, but it doesnt find any of them!
zBoy seems to have the same problem, are we doing anything wrong?

  • I can turn the display but am unable to transfer the shows from the top to the area of listings. They stay bunched on top. When I press done, it just turns over

  • Matt Comi — 10:29 am on 10.3.2007

Kalas – After you type the name of the show into the ‘Add TV show’ field, you must press enter in order to perform a search for that show.

Esther – My guess is that the ‘bunched on top’ list of shows is a drop down list of possibilities. You have to click on the show you like and it will be added to the list of TV shows.

  • […] Όπως κι ο περισσότερος κόσμος που ασχολείται καθημερινά με το internet, έτσι κι εγώ είμαι fun των (τηλεοπτικών) σειρών. 24, Lost, Family Guy, South Park, Prison Break and the list goes on and on που λένε στα ξενικά. […]

  • I have tried EVERYTHING to get mine to work…

I search (and pressed “enter”) and get back that there are no entries for the show…

Tried “Grey’s Anatomy” and “House”… neither come up….

    Could you offer some help???

  • This is cool. I’m glad that it finds the next new ep and skips the reruns – that’s perfect.

I’m curious what causes a TBA listing… which I guess makes me curious about where your data comes from. At any rate, awesome.

  • You have no idea how long I’ve waited for a widget like this!!

I’ve been relegated to using‘s TV flake to find out when my shows will play next. Now you’ve gone and put it directly into my OSX dashboard!

Do you have a paypal address, I wanna send you 5 bucks 🙂

  • Matt Comi — 1:17 pm on 12.3.2007

I do indeed have a paypal address JR! How nice of you to ask!

I’ve just made my primary email for Paypal.

    Thankyou very much in advance!

  • Cool stuff! Love it! Any plans to integrate this with EyeTV for one-click recording using .tvpi files?

  • dudesey pie — 1:02 am on 16.3.2007

dood, it only works for the US, are you aware that the us in under 10% of the worldwide population? It would have bee wise just to precise the limitation of your otherwise great little widget, all those who go on the apple site waste their time, because you didn’t. Shame for your brand…

  • Hey dudesey pie, it may only work for US air dates, but for everyone else who downloads American shows, it is also very handy 😉

  • Wow, what a cool widget! Might I suggest a future update include the show’s air time?

  • the lower case ” i ” doesn’t show up on the widget, i can’t turn the widget to the other side to put on stuff

  • Great! Just great! I just wish i could resize it.
    Txs anyway.

  • If a show doesn’t come up, make sure you start with a capital letter.

“house” will not work, but “House” will. Should be fixed in the next release.

  • can you please add an option that allows you to chose how long the information is shown after the airdate (currently it says yesterday for under a day then is removed)

  • Matt Comi — 11:17 am on 27.3.2007

Vasco – I am planning to add that feature (in one way or another)

Wesley – I tested that this morning and found it not to be the case, something must be unique to your case. If you contact me offline with your details I’ll look into it.

Tezz – Unfortunately, given the source of the data, I can’t do this. I understand how it would be useful though. This is yet another thing that I’m going to take into consideration for a future release 😉

Apologies all for taking so long to moderate your comments.

  • wesley — 5:04 pm on 4.4.2007

matt, i just tried again and now it seems to work with lowercase. weird 🙁

The only thing i would suggest is that it should only refresh once per day, not once every hour or however many times you do it.

  • I cannot flip it over either… there is no “i” in mine at all??

  • […] Forecast. This is what I made it for. More than 3 years ago. […]
