Big Bucket Software you like to use
TV Forecast 1.0.1 Now Pending Approval
September 24th, 2008

The TV Forecast iPhone App has been in the App Store for 6 days now and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. The launch has been pretty wild – waiting for 5 PM (Perth Time) to receive the day’s sales figures, nervously refreshing the charts every half hour to see if TV Forecast has made the slightest movement in the top 100 (it got to #64 in the US store) and stressing over the store reviews can really keep you on edge. Although the reviews have been awesomely positive, I still find myself getting worked up over the occasional “There is a online one just search for it in google tv forecast – 1 star”. Clever.

A minor update is now pending review and should be appearing in the store shortly. This update addresses the “all shows appear as TBA” bug that has been affecting some of you in a few non-english speaking countries. 1 It now also handles the case where a TV show is aired at a special time, that is, at a time that is different to its regular time slot. Finally, I’ve rolled in a feature that only just missed the cut for 1.0: when in the detailed view, tapping the episode banner now toggles between displaying the episode name and episode ID. I’ve been using 1.0.1 for a while now (naturally) and it’s gotten to the point where I can’t believe TV Forecast ever didn’t have this feature.

Thank you to everyone who has left a review. I really enjoy reading them and it’s always great to see when someone gets a kick out of your software. An unsung hero who deserves credit for TV Forecast is Jess – she helped out immensely with the development and was almost entirely responsible for the countdown view.

TV Forecast countdown view

Surely the killer feature.

1. To workaround this problem in 1.0, navigate to Settings > General > International > Region Format and select United States.

  • Love the app, it’s working great for me so far. The only thing I can’t figure out is how to get the showtimes correct for my time zone. I’m in -6 Central time. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for making such an awesome app!

  • That’s great news, thanks! I was beginning to get tired of the US formatting… Also the Episode’s ID is a much needed feature.
I have a minor feature request: The ability to show Yesterday’s shows as well. As I live outside the U.S., I have to rely to other… uh, means, to view my favorite shows. They are usually available to me the next day, so having a Yesterday’s shows means what I can watch TODAY ๐Ÿ™‚

  • does that mean the online version is deprecated?

  • Great news. Does this update fix the timezone issues (not a huge issue but would be nice for us Aussies who live in the future ๐Ÿ™‚ )?

Also didn’t realise you were an Aussie too. Is this true re: Perth time in the post?

  • @Kyle – I won’t be taking the web app down, but development for the immediate future will consist of bug fixes rather than the addition of further features. I might also rename it TV Forecast mini/nano/light or something like that to avoid confusion.

@andy – Yeah I live in Perth, Australia. You too? And no, I’m not addressing any time zone issues in 1.0.1.

  • I’m in Melbourne. Great to see some Aussies making beautiful and useful apps for the App Store. Keep up the good work.

  • great work Matt, keep it up mate…

2 features requests for future releases -maybe in 1.1 ;)-
    1) Flowchart view of all episodes.
    2) have the ability to show Yesterdayโ€™s shows.

  • Is it possible to cache the shows to view them when in subway or when there is not network insight.
All I get is TBA when i’m trying to show my friends on the way to work in subway about the cool app but no dates etc.
    Much appreciated

  • Time zone support would be really nice. Living in the Central time zone in the US all my shows are off by an hour because the times seem to be posted for the Eastern time zone.

  • Why are the results from the iPhone Webapp different from the Native App? I get very different results between the two for the same list of shows. Over hald of the shows that I added either list TBA in the native app have titles and dates in the webapp or vice versa.

The shows that have discrepancies between the two apps are: Heroes, Smallville, Hannah Montana, Battlestar Galactica, Ben 10 Alien Force, Caprica, Lost and Spectacular Spider-Man.

I really feel like I need to check both apps to make sure I’m not missing something since neither app has complete information.

  • Love the app! Really great work, worth every penny. Glad to see there is an update coming… Can I ask if there will be a fix for the countdown timer? Currently if you have your iPod touch or iPhone clock set to 24 hour time the countdown counts down to a.m. whether or not the show is a.m. or p.m..

@Matt The discrepancy is due to the fact that the widget and web app source their data from TV.com. The new iPhone App sources its data from TVRage.com. This is why the widget and web app have been experiencing problems due to the TV.com redesign but the iPhone App has remained solid. I am considering migrating all versions to TVRage as TVRage is third-party friendly, but this is just an idea.

@Chris Yes, that problem is fixed in 1.0.1.

I just bought your app. I get a bug saying the shows are TBA but I know they’ll air. (I’m cross referencing with wikipedia and epguides) My country is Turkey and operator is Turkcell. Bought the app from Turkish App Store.

  • Hi! I bought the iPhone version and I’ve used the dashboard version for aaages. I have the following suggestions:
    a) Synchronize between the iPhone and the dashboard. Somtimes I add shows to one but forget to add it to the other.
    b) Settings in the iPhone version to pick the timezone. It says Stargate Atlantis is on at 10pm, but it comes on at 7pm (I’m in PST).

    Love the programs!

  • “Desperate Housewives” is still showing under “TBA” after the update. I tried to delete it and re-add it, but it didn’t change anything.

  • Fantastic update. Now for Timezone support and we’ll be all set!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I too would like to put in a request to fix up the timezone issues. Currently located in Melbourne, Australia and all of the TV Shows are listed 1 day ahead :(. This means I can’t actually see what is on today as they have already vanished from the list because the App thought they aired “Yesterday” in our timezone.

A fix for this would be greatly appreciated!

I love this app, but have one suggestion: is there some way to link the dashboard widget with the iPhone app so that you don’t have to enter the shows in to the software twice? I had it all nicely set up until the update came through the other day, and then had to delete the app on my phone to install it, losing all my show settings! (And now I cannot do a search successfully to add them back, though that may be because I am in China, and the net nanny may have it blocked.)

  • Matt Comi — 11:51 am on 29.9.2008

@B. Erdik Version 1.0.1 just hit the store. This version fixes the problem you’re talking about.

@AgentSmith Yep, the next episode of Desperate Housewives is marked as TBA at TVRage also. It can take them a little while to update the listing after an episode airs.

  • If I do a search for Gurren Lagann, the iPhone app brings up “Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann”, which is the full Japanese title for the show. It’s dimmed out though, which is very confusing. I kept tapping it, looking for an “add” button, etc… It looked like perhaps it was disabled, but with no explanation it was not clear at all. Later when I searched for another show, I saw both enabled and disabled results, so it made more sense. But it’s still a bit odd that it would bother to show a result I can’t do anything with!

Now that I look at TVRage.com, I understand a bit more what’s going on: they have an entry for the show, but no US listings. Disappointing, since it’s currently airing on Sci-Fi (for the first time in the US), and has been for several weeks now.

I found this all particularly frustrating since the show came up perfectly fine in the widget. If you do continue using different databases for the two, I’d recommend at least making a note that TVRage.com is used in the description for the app. For two products with the same name from the same developer, I’d at least expect the same data. It looks to me like TVRage is pretty useless for pretty much anyone that watches foreign TV shows. The site only lets you select a single air date for an episode.

It’s a shame because I love the app otherwise, but it isn’t very useful to me if I can’t keep track of all the shows I’m watching.

  • Matt Comi — 12:17 pm on 29.9.2008

@Mike Piontek Yep, I see your point. I don’t know this show but I see that it ran to completion in Japan and is now airing in the US. In these situations, I think TVRage usually includes a separate listing, something like Gurren Lagann (US) – but not this time.

I will certainly separate the search results into “Airing” and “Ended” so as to make it obvious why a particular show can’t be added.

The main reason for the switch to TVRage is that it is third-party friendly, (providing feeds, web services and the like) unlike TV.com that requires scraping. Cheers for the feedback and congratulations on the success of your app.

  • Thanks Matt! After a lot of digging, I DID finally figure out how to view and add alternative listings for shows:

    – Search for a show and click the link to view its Home page
    – On the left side, click Episode Contribs
    – Click Alternate Airdates

From there it’s relatively straightforward, you can choose the country you’re adding air dates for and pick the date and time. I went through and added the Sci Fi airdates for Gurren Lagann… They’re currently waiting for approval. Hopefully that will allow them to show up in TV Forecast? Perhaps not though, if it’s seeing that the series has “ended” and then disabling it.

I can definitely appreciate the advantage of having feeds and services you can hook into! Keep up the great work.

first I had the dashboard widget, then used the iPhone web version and now I got iPhone app. This developer is simply amazing… Love these apps… Still use all three but this new app us the killer!

  • I saw an old post where you said you’d consider porting this to yahoo widgets or something so it can be used on PC’s is this ever likely to happen? Or can someone recommend something? I can’t find anything like it ๐Ÿ™

  • Very readable at work, but when I downloaded it at home, the font looks weird and like an outline. Did something change?

    Hello,
for me 1 thing miss : Yesterday show!
we’ve today/Tomorrow and the next week , but it’s quite interesting to know the one show yesterday…
    what do you think?

  • Great work on TV Forecast! One feature that might be useful would be a way to have automatic email reminders of all upcoming shows in our list (rather than having to select each one individually to be emailed). In addition, a cool feature would be to get a text message reminder for an upcoming show an hour before it’s air time (the advanced warning can be customizable, for example).

  • Hi there…

First of all i’d like to say that TV Forecast rules.. so far i only used the web based interface and it is awesome.. now i got the app (v1.0.1) for my iPhone. At first i was amazed by it but after i disconnected the WiFi and wanted to open the app again all the shows stated TBA…

It’s disappointing to see the the app doesn’t cache the data about the shows and you need an active internet connection everytime you want to use the app. As i see it the app should cache the data whenever there is an active internet connection and work with that data until the next update…

Anyways… don’t get me wrong i don’t want to criticize, i just want to point out my opinion. Maybe you haven’t thought of it before and hopefuly the next version will have this feature too. Without this feature the app is less appealing (to me) than the safari/web option… with Safari i only have to load the page once, disconnect the WiFI and everytime i open safari there it is.

in closing i’d like to say that the app is great it just needs some more tweaks here and there
kind wishes and keep up the good work
